Setters hold columns at Australian airport

ERECTORS of the precast concrete structural frame for the new international air terminal at Sydney airport, Australia, have developed an unusual device to help place the 60 ft. high columns. The device is a column- setter which supports the 25-ton columns and holds. them in place until they can be linked together by concrete beams.

The new terminal is part of a A$42 million expansion and modernisation scheme and will be the largest international air terminal in the Southern Hemisphere. The building will be 680 ft. long, 260 ft. wide and three storeys high.

Setter being positioned

Designed and built by Maros Construction Co. Pty. Ltd. Sydney, the com- pany erecting the termin- al's precast concrete framework, the column- setter is built from tubular steel and does away with the need for four steel

wire guy ropes which

would otherwise be at- tached to each column. The absence of these steel hawsers means greater flexibility of the working site and more freedom of movement for the contractor's 80-ton mobile crane. Ten column setters are being used; they are bolted around the base of each column after it has been hauled upright and while it is still being supported by the mobile crane. Once the column-setter is locked into place, it forms a temporary base for the column. Turn-buckles built into the column-setter are then used to plumb the column until it is exactly vertical. The column can then be linked by beams to the rest of the terminal's structural frame.
