thus be considered comparable with the external degree examination of a University-this of course is no mean goai and to build up a reasonable pass standard, evening classes will have to be organised based on the R.I.B.A. Intermediate Examination syllabus and tutored by members of the Royal Institute.
The passing of this examination would qualify the student as a Student R.I.B.A. and he would be qualified to enter a recognised British or Dominion University at fourth year stage to take the final two year course qualifying for full membership of the R.I.B.A. It is felt that, in the immediate future, the keen student who gets this far locally would well merit sponsorship by Government or Municipality for the final two years overseas.
It must be emphasised that this should only be considered an interim arrangement as it cannot be considered as a satis- factory long term alternative to the full five-year University
course.
The Board of Examiners have this next step actively in mind. Preliminary taiks have already taken place with the officials of the British Council who are most willing to assist by placing at the Boards disposal their premises for lectures, evening classes, meetings and exhibitions and for liaison work Mi making avanaole jums, etc. on Architectural and Town rianning subjects,
The all important subject of books has also been discussed with the British Councu Library Advisor and contact has also been made with the Librarian of the H.I.B.A. on this subject, An adequate range of books covering the R.I.B.A. syllabus readily available on loan to the student is, of course, a vital first step.
The growing response to the Institute's proficiency examinations illustrates the local enthusiasm in the pro- fession and the results in the higher categories, although dis- appointing in numbers, show a marked ability in the few wno merit coaching to the higher standard outuned above.
The Institute has been generously assisted in its educational programme by a Government grant through the Board of Architects. With the widening recognition of the proficiency examinations and the future policy of looking ahead to encourage more advanced study, considerable expendi- ture will necessarily be entailed and it is confidently hoped that Government will assist materially on the financial side to further what is undoubtedly an educational policy of public importance and one which will repay big dividends in streng- thening the Architectural profession in the Colony at a time when large housing development and other important building schemes are in prospect.
