NEW SCIENCE BLOCK

Work has just been started on the New Science Block of the Hong Kong University. This addition to the University amenities will satisfy a long felt need for more comprehensive laboratory accommodation and make possible the extension of the curriculum provided by this most highly regarded institute. A glance at the plans on the opposite page will provide some idea of the extent of the facilities provided in this new building.

The ground floor will accommodate a complete Physics Laboratory, together with smaller rooms where private

and advanced work can be undertaken. In addition, an Electrical Measurement Room, Demonstration Room and Light Experiment Room are provided together with Lec- ture and Store Rooms and a Lectures Office.

The first floor is devoted to the Chemistry section. Here again, in addition to the Main Laboratory, a small Laboratory for advanced work, a Lecture Room, Micro- Chemistry Room, Physical Chemistry Room and Balance Room will be provided.

On the second floor will be situated a huge modern Lecture Theatre, a smaller Lecture Room, a Library and Reading Room, a Museum and Herbarium, Staff Common Room, and full facilities for Elementary Laboratory work. A Research Laboratory is also situated on this floor.

The Greenhouse and Projector Room, which will be situated on the roof of the building, complete the facilities which will be provided within this building.

A glance through the specifications prepared by the architects for this building shows that every detail of the construction work has been carefully considered and only the best and most suitable of materials will be provided. For instance, the contracts for the Patent Roofing, Steel Doors and Windows, Slab Doors and Door Furniture, the Electrical and Gas Installation and fittings, and Exhaust Fans, are all separate contracts as is also the contract for the Furniture, Benches, Cupboards, etc., which alone amounts to over $30,000.00.

The internal and external finish of the building as is befitting the importance of a building such as this is re- ceiving the special attention of the Architects. Water- proofed cement plaster is being used where conditions are severe, "Acoustic-Pulp" acoustic plaster will be used in the Lecture Theatre while over 80,000 square feet of Gypsum plaster has been specified generally throughout the interior.

It is expected that the building will be completed in time for the opening of the new term this Autumn.

The Architects are Messrs. Leigh & Orange, and the General Contractors are Messrs. Sung Kee & Co.
