rooms. Each floor has nine rooms (12 feet 3 inches by 10 feet 3 inches) each with its own bathroom and built-in wardrobe. wardrobe. There is a tea kitchen and a store on each floor, and all floors are served by a small lift.

The construction of the hotel is straightforward reinforced con-

crete frame with brick infill panels, supported on timber piles. On the front elevation the window panels are set slightly back to give a little shadow in the midafternoon sun. As the room sizes were such that stan- dard steel windows could not be entirely utilised over the full width, in order to keep the cost down,

standard windows plus adjustable louvres were used.

Total contract cost of the building was Malayan $240,000 and the con- tractor was Yap Shui Contractors of Jesselton. Architects for the building were James Cubitt, Leonard Manas- seh and Partners, and Mr. D. K. Gudgeon was the structural engineer.
