Pokfulam Road, Hong Kong, together with the restriction that any building erected on it must be set back at least 20 feet from the road, dictated the setting and, to some extent. the shape of the newly-com- pleted Dor Fook Mansions, owned by Dor Fook Co. Ltd.
As a result, this twelve storey block of flats gets away from the rather stereotyped apartment blocks of a mirror pattern set on either side of a central stair and lift tower. Lifts and stairs are certainly in the middle, but the flats are set askew about the tower, with the larger flat of each floor projecting nearer the road and the smaller flat set back.
The staircase tower itself is un- usual in that the lifts and staircases are set in interlocking fashion with each lift alongside one staircase and backing on to the other. In this way the maximum use of made of the available space.
Finish of the block is in tones of white and grey. The whole is set on a plinth rendered in black Shanghai plaster which is repeated in panels under the windows. The rest of the outer wall is in white cement plaster finish, relieved by bands of grey marking each storey. Cement hoods are provided for air conditioners. projecting from each bedroom, and a grey cement grille acts as a protec- tive rail for the verandah set into the corner of the living room of the larger flats.
