There is no doubt that every owner of a property, whether industrial or private, thinks first of some means of protection for his property against trespassers. This is the reason for high boundary walls and different kinds of fencing which in many cases are erected even before the buildings themselves. Protection being the chief aim, is however, not the only factor to be considered in modern times.
Fencing should not only serve as an effective protec- tion, but should also add to the appearance of the building. It is little consolation to the owner and architect when the fence, either totally obstructs the view of the building or mars its appearance, though it may be quite satisfactory from the point of view of required protection, and in hot climates, solid walls are particularly inconvenient as they prevent free circulation of air and breeze.
After careful investigation and numerous experi- ments, Chain Link Wire Netting Fences have been widely adopted as ideal enclosures instead of solid walls, as the difficulties met with in this case do not exist when the wire netting fence is used, and numerous types are offered to the selection of the customer, the better to suit his particular requirement as well as the purpose in view.
Fences manufactured of Chain Link Wire Netting have gained such a wide popularity in Europe and America, that they can be safely taken as the kind of enclosure most generally used. High unclimable types are used for factories and schools, lighter and lower types for private properties, parks and country estates. Sports grounds, especially tennis courts, are nearly exclusively enclosed with Chain Link Wire Netting of suitable mesh manufactured from wire of different
gauges.
In Australia, Chain Link Wire Netting is a prime necessity for farmers, as practically every field is enclosed with it to form sufficient protection against rabbits and other pests destroying the crops. This country claims the longest Chain Link Fence in the world which is of over 75 miles in one continuous length.
Such a large demand resulted in the establishment of many wire netting factories in Europe, America and Australia. In the Far East, however, this kind of fencing has been always imported, and the delays caused thereby together with the high cost of freight have often prevented its general use, until in 1928, Elliston & Co. of Shanghai started to manufacture Chain Link Netting locally, thus becoming pioneers in this particular line. Admittedly, it was a difficult start, since fences of this kind could be demonstrated to the customer, who often had very little idea of the advanced types of fencing.

One of their first customers was the Shanghai Municipal Council, who carefully investigated the advantages of the new type of fencing with the result that in the course of a year, it became practically their standard type for enclosures of parks, open spaces, children's playgrounds, baseball stands and tennis courts under their control. The next customers were the leading oil companies, such as, the Asiatic Petroleum Co., Texas and Standard Oil, which used the Chain Link Fencing at home and were well acquainted with the advantages of this type. It would appear, therefore, that the advantages of modern types of fencing, which have been adopted for general use in Europe, America, Australia and elsewhere are being recognised more and more in the Far East.
