Necessity is the mother of invention, but it
is also, on occasion, the reviver of old ideas.
With the cutting off of supplies of build- ing materials in Hong Kong from Europe there remained two alternatives to prospective builders, either to abandon their schemes or to fall back as far as possible on the materials available locally.
We illustrate above a well designed bunga- low in which the original roof of reinforced concrete is to be replaced by one of local Chinese tiles.
The design suffers nothing in colourfulness by the change nor, with a properly designed and constructed roof of this type, is the dura- bility of the building affected to any great extent.
This example will undoubtedly be followed by many others unless there is an improvement in the materials market very soon.
