diameter on the bottom of the excavation with the pumps going full speed while the tubes were filled with concrete. At a given signal the tubes were all raised simultaneously depositing a large volume of concrete into the bottom of the caisson sufficient to withstand the water pressure from outside.
It would appear that the working area available would be ample for the contractor's requirements. This was not the case as part of the ground was used for coal storage and excavation for foundations, pump-pits and culverts had to proceed simultaneously with piling. To add to the congestion, structural steel arrived before the foundations were ready. The unloading of the steel members presented an unusual problem. They were dis- charged from steamers into junks which were towed alongside the seawall close by the proposed New Station. The junk jib could lift a maximum load of 5 tons but
several girders weighed 7 tons. As the factor of safety of a junk's jib is generally about 1 in 1, 7 tons was a load the master was not prepared to tackle. The next rise in the tide, however, solved the difficulty as it was high enough to enable the girders to be moved on rollers off the junk on to the seawall!
Parts of the new boiler began to arrive shortly after the structural steel, and the erection of the steel for the Boiler House had to be rushed accordingly. At one stage 100 tons of steelwork was completely assembled in one week. So that work could be continued without inter- ruption during the rainy season, the whole building site was covered with matting carried on bamboo framework. This was completed in less than a fortnight.
Speed was an important factor as machinery had to be housed as it arrived. At one time, the desirability of using rapid hardening cement was contemplated for all
