TEMPORARY BUNGALOW APARTMENTS

AT MT. NICHOLSON

One of the simple bedroom apartment units of which fourteen have been provided.

The Requirements

European

Emergency accommodation is required for Government servants and their families for a strictly tem- porary period of about two or three years and the accommo- dation to be provided is to comply with a standard of minimum requirements.

Proposed Site

The site proposed for the erection of this accommodation is that of the former War Memorial Hospital site at Blacks Link. This is an already prepared and extensive level area situated above Stubbs Road near the junction of Bowen Road. It has a total area of about 41 acres and is divided into a large upper area and four smaller areas situated at slightly lower levels.

Type of Accommodation

The accommodation is required for a temporary period and it must therefore be inexpensive in cost and simple to erect. The most suitable form of construction for this purpose is a one storey building. Such a building can be constructed with thin partition walls and the load on the foundations would be sufficiently light to enable the ground floor slab to act as the foundation. This would dispense with the necessity of the usual type of foundations and economise in excavation. To simplify and standardise construction a constant unit of 12'8" has been adopted for the spacing of partition walls. These conditions determine the type of accommodation. As will be seen from the plans, it consists of a series of partition walls spaced at 12′ 6′′ centres which have been planned into living rooms, bedrooms, bath rooms, kitchens and verandahs.
