meters for controlling the temperature of the aggregate and the asphalt. The drier is 5 ft. diameter by 30 ft. long which gives adequate control of drying and heating. Two 175 h.p. horizontal oil fired boilers provide steam for heat- ing the asphalt and firing the drier.

Both the above plants had previously been used on other jobs and had been modified and improved to meet techniques worked out on previous projects by the Morrison-Knudsen organization.

Paving Equipment

The asphalt distributor used for applying the prime coat is an Etynere 1500 gal. type mounted on a Model KB11 International truck. It is of the latest design and was bought new in the U.S.A. for this job. Ten new 4 cu. yd. Dodge dump trucks were used for hauling the asphaltic concrete from the hot mix plant to the asphalt spreaders. Two Barber-Greene Crawler type asphalt spreaders were used to lay down the hot mix. One machine will handle the output of the hot plant or approximately 100 tons per hour.

340,000 square yards of asphaltic concrete surfacing was produced and laid down in less than ninety days with this equipment.

Conclusion

Chandler B. Griggs is the Airways Engineer in Charge for the U.S. Civil Aeronautics Administration at Manila, The Contractors' staff includes Robert R. Gebo and N. D. Teters, Vice-Presidents of Morrison-Knudsen and Marscon Inc., respectively.

The fact that this work will be substantially com- pleted on 1st July 1949 or about 60 days ahead of schedule demonstrates that modern mechanized construction equip ment properly organized and supervised can be applied to large scale projects in the Far East resulting in a sub- stantial reduction in completion time over methods generally used in this part of the world.
