The smoke question has been tackled by the provision of two hoods and two separate flues to each dapor. The lower hood directly over the cooking slab leads direct to one flue and takes the bulk of the smoke, but any "eddies" are collected by the sloping hood at ceiling level with its separate flue. The height of the flues, carried up above surrounding ridge height, should give adequate draught.
Lighting to the dapors is by glass bricks to concen- trate suction draught throught the doorway.
The enclosing of the dapors in an enclosed paved courtyard will give adequate storage space-out of sight.— for the heaps of logs and odds and ends which tend usually to make a series of labourers' quarters so unsightly.
The scheme illustrated at Lorong Lalat lies in a densely populated area of the town and (as will be seen from the layout plan) is adjacent to the central stores and depots of the Municipal. Electrical Department, Water Department and Town Cleansing Department.
The site, originally a swamp, was filled in some years ago by the Town Cleansing Department under a controlled refuse tipping scheme; the water table is within four feet or so from the surface and rises with the tides.
The total scheme provides for 10 blocks of 24 rooms each and 7 blocks of 20 rooms each.
The scheme illustrated is the first stage of the scheme -4 blocks of 20 rooms each-started in December last year and now almost completed.
Piling on this site is of course essential and 5′′" diameter Balau piles were driven to 20′ and each takes one-third of a ton.
The tender for the building (by Messrs. Malaya Construction Co. was S$218,784.00, excluding piling costs which amounted to S$60,395.00. Roads and paths, sanita- tion and water supply, and electrical installation cost a further S$53,600.00.
In connection with the services, electric lighting is provided throughout, with water borne sanitation, and a separate tap to each dapor.
The scheme is being carried out to the design and under the direction of the Municipal Architect and Build- ing Surveyor, who hopes to commence work on a further six blocks within the next few weeks, and probably to complete the whole scheme in 1950-51.
A photograph of existing conditions this housing scheme is designed to eradicate.
