All 96 roof cables are zinc-coated bridge strands of 2 3/16 in. diameter. With the tension ring supported in the centre of the arena 12 in. above its free position, a cableway was built on top of the tension ring with both ends extending to a movable anchorage on the compression ring. One end of the roof cable was attached to this high line, which pulled the cable up to the compression ring. Here the end of the cable was pushed into the anchor pipe, embedded in the concrete, and secured by inserting a notched anchor plate over the end cable fitting.
With the outer end secured, the high line picked up the other end of the cable and raised it to the tension ring. A 4 x 15 in. threaded rod on this end was fed into the anchor hole in the ten- sion ring and secured with an anchor plate and a bolt. The anchorage at the tension ring allowed for a 3 in. adjust- ment in the cable length.
At the start of the cable erection, it was extremely important that diame- trically opposite cables be attached simultaneously to avoid stresses that might move the tension ring out of position or tend to topple the shoring tower. Two opposing cables were strung first; then an adjoining pair was erected.
