Dredging operations proceeded con- tinuously 24 hours by day and night, six days a week, with frequent work on Sundays. Hill excavation con. tinued from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., usual- ly seven days a week. On several occasions, over a million cubic yards of material were moved in a month. The dredging was completed in months, after which the 60 acres of paved runway and taxiway were built in less than nine months. though the bulk of the work was done by machine, the average labour force. numbered about 2,000, with a peak figure of 3,000, and in all some 20 million man hours were expended on the work.

Al-

Sino-Anglo-French Co-operation

The construction of this vast pro- ject in the short span of three years has been an outstanding achievement, and a fine example of Sino-Anglo- French co-operation; it is the first occasion on which this French Com- pany have undertaken work in a Bri- tish Territory. Tribute is also due in small measure to the Chinese en- no gineers, technicians and surveyors and also to the hard work and skill of the Chinese workers on the job.

The new runway was brought into use on the afternoon of August 31st, 1958, and the two old runways were then closed. Work has already start- ed on the next phase of development which involves the construction of new terminal area on the site of one of the former runways.
