The architects' drawing above shows the scheme which was finally decided upon. Some minor changes in the elevations have been made since. Two other designs which were considered are shown. Several others were given careful consideration.

Much though we may regret the passing of old land- marks in Hong Kong, we must recognise that the course of progress cannot be stayed. Modernisation and advance- ment, particularly if it brings with it bright airy interior working spaces, and clean planes and pleasant external

elevations, must be welcomed as part of our present day existence, leaving regrets behind us.

With the demolition of York and King's Buildings, to be followed in due course by the Union Building, three late Victorian buildings, picturesque, perhaps, but dismal and dark, will have disappeared, and another modern multi-storeyed office block will have risen in their place.
