ing delivery theatres, there are a total of 20 major and eight minor operat- ing theatres.
Normally major theatres are grouped in pairs with shared facili- ties for sterilising, washing up, equipment storage and recovery. There is also one minor O.T. to each pair usually which shares a separate sluice with the recovery room.
Each theatre has its own scrub up and anaesthetic room and has darkening facilities on the windows which face north.
One radiology theatre has special storage and sterilizing facilities for radium needles.
The typical theatres is approx. 20 ft. square and 9 ft. 9 in. high, but one orthopaedic O.T. has been leng thened by one bay to 30 ft.
Special lighting and X-1ay facili- ties are also being provided for one neurosurgical theatre.
Most of the theatres are housed in the Northeast wing from the second to twentieth floors on the same level as the wards they serve.
This Northeast theatre wing has a special sterile service lift which con- nects on the lower floors with the laundry, pharmacy and blood bank and C.S.S.D. for which linen and sterile stores are provided on each theatre floor.
A chute with connecting hoppers in the sink rooms of each floor dis- charges at the lower ground floor level for disposal of used linen.
The children's theatres are entire- ly separate in the Northeast wing and adjacent to the children's wards in the western half of the hospital.
Details regarding the special facili- ties provided are listed under the section on Engineering Services.
Special offices and changing rooms are placed off the approach corridor to the sterile O.T. areas.
KITCHEN
The central patients' kitchen is at ground level on the Northeast wing and has been carefully designed to meet the detailed local requirements of Chinese, European, Indian and special diet cooking. Some of the latest large U.K. labour saving
robust equipment has been included together with specially designed locally made gas fired cookers for Chinese cooking.
Steam, gas and electricity have all been included as cooking media so as to diversify the demand in case of the failure of any one supply.
Very special attention has also been given to cleanliness and ex- tensive use has been made of stainless steel and tiled surfaces. Overhead natural and artificial lighting are in- corporated. Also by means of special recessed overhead extract ducts heat and smells will ultimately be dis- charged at the top of the main west lobby tower.
Food is delivered daily by lorry from
a compradore for immediate cooking and consumption and apart from an emergency reserve cover non-delivery during typhoons
to
only small bulk stores are there- fore provided. A large cold store and milk preparation room have been included in addition to clean- ing and parking facilities for the electrically heated food trolleys.
A refrigerated garbage store has also been included near a lorry loading bay in the north service yard.
An entirely separate small com- pradore kitchen has been provided at ground level for the medical. clerical and menial staff canteen where meals can be bought as de- sired. These large rooms can also be used for staff meetings and re- creational purposes.
CENTRAL STERILE
SUPPLIES
This department, roughly 8,000 square feet in area, is on the first floor of the Northeast wing im- mediately underneath the operating theatres and is intended ultimately to take over the supply of all sterile supplies throughout the entire hos- pital except 0. T. instruments.
Included with the normal facili- ties for such departments are the following special items:-ultrasonic instrument washer, automatic glove washers and dryers, pass through drying ovens, infra-red conveyor sterilizer for syringes, needle sharpening machine, two autoclaves

for
of approx. 28 cubic feet with auto- matic controls, one smaller auto- clave of approx. 21 cubic feet also with automatic controls, ovens sterilizing, two 40 gallon per hour sterile water stills which discharge through stainless steel tanks to the sterile solution preparation area on the floor below.
Ward collection trolley parking and storage space is also included for the various types of sterile items.
At the end of the corridor just outside the main department is a special locked cupboard from which additional supplies can be drawn for any emergency at night or out- side of normal working hours.
PATHOLOGY
DEPARTMENT
This department, roughly 9,000 square feet in area, is situated on the first floor of the Northeast wing and links by a foot-bridge to the upper floor of a two storey Animal House to the North of the North service road. This circular building in order to give good natural ven- tilation has an open central well with the animal rooms and operat ing theatre on the upper floor and kitchen and storage areas below served by a special road link. A dumbwaiter connects the kitchen with the animals' floor level.
The department itself includes with the usual reception arrange- ments a special examination and specimen-taking laboratory. Labora. tories are included for serology & haematology, histology (with cut- ting up room), bacteriology and biochemistry (with fume cup- board).
Special media preparation, incu- bator, cold and deep freeze, steriliz- ing and washing up facilities are al so incorporated.
A teaching classroom and several specially equipped offices are also provided.
