The behaviour of a concrete ele- ment when exposed to fire depends, inter alia, on the properties of the aggregate and, because of this, ag- gregates are grouped into two classes, those of class 1 being the less affected by heat. Well-burnt clinker, foamed slag, expanded clay, shale of slate and pumice, which are exposed to heat in the course of their formation, are all included in class 1; sintered pulverized fuel ash could now be added to this list, for the Most natural aggre- gates, other than limestone, fall into class 2.

same reason.

Table 2 shows the fire resistance of concrete walling in blocks made with class 1 aggregates. in terms of the minimum thickness required to give different periods of fire resis-

tance.

Foamed slag blocks reinforced in every horizontal joint are sometimes used for the protection of steel stanchions; 3 in. blocks unplastered. give four hours fire resistance, and 2 in, blocks two hours.

a

Vermiculite/cement slabs. in 4:1 mix, wire-mesh reinforced and finished with a skim coat of gypsum

plaster can be used similarly, a 2

21 in. slab giving four hours and a 1 in. slab two hours fire resistance.

Reference is made in B.S. Code of Practice C.P. 115 to the use of vermiculite concrete to increase the fire resistance of prestressed concrete members; vermiculite concrete slabs 1 in. thick placed as a lining to the mould, give an increase of ap proximately two hours.
