The one-room flat compared with abodes in the slum areas and the overcrowded conditions in the town centre is a definite improvement in terms of living conditions: in the slums and the overcrowded central area services such as sewers. elec. tricity, piped water and gas are often not available: the cubicles in the town centre are quite often very much smaller than the one-room flats.

facilities. community centres, chil- dren's playgrounds and open spaces are provided for the people living within the housing estate. It is hoped that when the economic posi- tion of the people improves, the occupants of these one-room flats may eventually move to the two or three-room flats.

(a) One room units with about 140 sq.ft. of bed/sitting room, 80 sq.ft. of service area consisting of a bathroom and W.C. combined. cooking area and a balcony for eating, washing and drying purposes (b) Two room flats with living room, bedroom, kitchen. bathroom and W C. combined and a balcony of total area of about 400 sq.ft.

fullscale satellite towns in Jurong. Woodlands and Yio Chu Kang. un- less industry is developed sufficiently in these areas to provide employment for the people in the neighbourhood it is unlikely that these towns will take shape in the near future.

Although the factors of land cost in these satellite towns are very much lower and consequently the rental can be cheaper, the cost of transport will upset the cheaper rental and in the end it will be morɑ expensive to stay in these satellite towns if employment can only be found in the City.

When the programme for indus trialization in Jurong takes place the first satellite town in the true sense of the word will be developed in Jurong. In the meantime the housing programme in Singapore will be con- fined to fringe developments such as Queenstown and Toa Payoh, the Central Area Redevelopment such as in Selegie Road and Short Street and the minor rural developments such as in Jalan Eunos Malay Settlement.
