TYRE DHARTERS

TYRE A CHANTERE

Designed by the Chief Engineer, H.Q. Land Forces, Messrs. Paul Y. Construction Co., secured the contract for this scheme which is to be completed shortly at a total cost of £512,000 including site formation, residential buildings, amenity buil dings, servants' quarters and la- trines. The furniture and fittings, lighting and plumbing have all been provided for in this total.

In addition to the living quarters, a clinic and medical centre, and a N.A.A.F.I. shop have been con- structed of the same unit dimensions, together with five small shops which have been rented to suppliers. This should somewhat ease the complica. tions of shopping in such an isolated community. N.A.A.F.I. has also erected a small bar.

The dwellings are built on low- lying hills on either side of Route Twisk, the military road running from Tsun Wan to Sek Kong, which in itself is an engineering feat of considerable ingenuity and interest. The quarters are grouped fairly close together on a long narrow site, and house approximately 800 per- sons; servants will bring the total population of this settlement to almost 1, 200.

The interiors of the new Married Quarters are tastefully furnished and are provided with all the comforts of home.

The children have not been for gotten and there is a school com- plete with playground. Three tennis courts have also been provided.

Future plans call for a church and a welfare centre, thus meeting both physical and spiritual needs. At near-by Sek Kong camp, a cinema and a swimming pool are already in existence, thus the whole project almost takes the forin of a satellite town, which would seem to be the answer to Hong Kong's civilian accommodation inasmuch as suitable building sites are being rapidly exhausted.

Great pains were taken by the authorities in drawing up plans for the new townsite to ensure the best available housing conditions; the Army families now in residence. testify that a good job has been done. The Army authorities are to be congratulated on the energy and efficiency with which they are tack- ling their accommodation problems, and their methods might well be studied by the civil authorities to the benefit of the community as a whole.

Site plan of the development at Sek Kong described in the article showing grouping arrangement and the position of the various types of buildings. As will be seen the buildings are conveniently arranged in relation to the main road, but placed in such a way as to avoid the monotony usual to developments of this nature.
