December last year, at an actual cost of $22,800.00 per flat including site works and all services.
The United Kingdom finally granted approval for the export of steel for two more blocks, eight storeys in height, in the first and second granting of 1949, and this steelwork has now been erected and the building work is proceeding on both blocks.
One has the same floor plan as the four- storeyed block and with the cost of necessary lift installation and increased height of the building, the average expenditure per flat is increased to approximately $32,500.00 including site works and all services.
In view of this increased cost, the second block has been designed, within the same steel framework as two-bedroom flats, three to each floor in place of the original intention of two to each floor of the three-bedroom flats. Thus the cost is reduced to an approximate $23,000.30 per flat.
The layout of the original three-bedroom flats, two to each floor, is illustrated on the previous page. A cursory glance will disclose one very unusual feature in apartment construction and that is the considerable amount of covered verandah area in- cluded in the plan. Not only the living rooms, but every bedroom includes this feature which means so much to flat dwellers in the tropics.
Finishes include quarry tile floors in living room and dining recess, kitchen and bathroom, and coloured cement tiles in the bedrooms, Dadoes to kitchen and bathroom are tiled.
The completed four-storey blocks were erected by Ong Kim Seng, and the two eight-storey blocks under construction are being erected by Rapid Construction Co.
