For works contingent on land sales, 37 orders were issued for 15 sewer and or stormwater connections on the Island and 11 on the Mainland. In addition, Government sewers and stormwater drains were extended by 2784 ft. and 669 ft. respectively on the Island, and by 1274 ft. and 814 ft. respectively on the Mainland.
A 15" concrete stormwater culvert in Robinson Road, from steps to I.L. 647 leading to Glenealy, was commenced in June, and 10 sewer connections were made in Hung Hom
area.
The shortage of stoneware pipe supplies became acute during the quarter; however, it is anticipated that deliveries from Britain shortly should improve the situation.
Many minor drainage works, including installations and connections, extensions, repairs and adjustments, were also carried out by the Drainage Office for other Offices.
ELECTRICAL & MECHANICAL OFFICE
In the Electrical Section, 150 electrical installations were completed and over 89,000 yards of wire were used; 135 electrical installations were in hand; 1278 faults were repaired, and 146 estimates were prepared
43 Vehicles were received by the Mechanical Section for various Government departments, and the construction of all- metal utility type bodies for 15 Morris 10-cwt. chassis has been contracted to a local body builder,
A total of 5345 jobs were completed by the Workshops during the quarter.
PORT WORKS OFFICE
Repair works continued on the Government piers, most of which were completed during this period. As the Wilmer Street Pier is required for a public purpose, i.e. an additional passenger ferry service to be inaugurated between this pier and Shamshuipo Ferry Pier, notice to terminate the tenancy let to Woo Hop Shipping Company was given as from 1st May, and repairs on the sub-structure are now in progress. Work was also commenced on the proposed layout for the new Star Ferry Piers. Construction of a reinforced concrete beacon on Kowloon Rock and the painting of marks on the sea-wall at Tai Wan were carried out at the request of Marine Department.
The total quantity dredged by two units at Causeway Bay Typhoon Shelter and French Street Dust Boat Station amounted to 67,232 cubic yards.
With the closure of dumps at Aberdeen and Staunton Creek, the eastern end of North Point reclamation was opened for public dumping and a total of 17,610 truck-loads were dumped during this quarter.
Since the last report, total of rubble mound at the North Point Sea Wall completed was 50%. For the Kun Tong Nullah, all dredging, dumping and hydraulic filling were com- pleted; construction of nullah outfall is now proceeding, and 90% of reclamation for A.P.C. by hydraulic fill was completed. The quarrying of granite rubble increased by 24,000 cu. yds., bringing the total to 73,000 cu. yds. Public dumping at Hunghom continues, with an average of 49 truck-loads per day.
Survey work included the completion of plotting of con- toured plans for Piper's Hills, preparation of plans for 1 permanent pier on Hong Kong side and two in Kowloon, and hydrographic surveys undertaken at various points in Hong Kong Harbour.
Land and marine borings included borings taken down both sides of the taxi-track at Kai Tak Airport to ascertain the soil composition, water table and bearing pressures, etc., and preliminary investigation of foundations of possible pier sites at Kennedy Town, Marsh Road, Ma Tau Kok and Hung Hom Stores Piers.
Normal maintenance work was carried out at the Airport. Very slow progress due to bad weather and plant break-downs was reported on the contract for Bituminous Surfacing to Kai Tak Runways, whilst the contract for Construction of Taxi- track and Drains was completed at the end of April. Owing to bad weather and the resulting wet condition of the base- coat, the contract time for Construction of Hardstandings was extended by one month.
The P.W.D. Laboratory carried out 1071 tests on concrete cubes, 30 on other concrete samples, 32 aggregate sieve analysis, 4 bituminous material test and 69 various soil analysis tests.
VALUATION & RESUMPTION OFFICE
Total valuations for 35 lots for lease renewals amounted to $6,747,640.00, 5 properties were valued at $5,870,228 for resumption purposes, 7 properties were valued at $255,342 for exchanges, while 231 hereditaments were valued at $7,415,590.00 for the Estate Duty Commissioner.
Renewal premiums and premiums by instalments were computed for those lessees who wish to "spread out" their payments, and negotiations were opened with 75 property owners with a view to free surrender of the portion of their lots forming roads.
Valuations of Government property, purchases by Govern- ment, and town planning schemes etc. amounted to $3,308,500.

The installation of a stand-by Diesel Engine was pleted at Aberdeen Lower Pumping Station and a similar installation for the Upper Station was in hand.
For the laying of the Bowen Road 24′′ main, road rein- statement was put in hand and is almost completed. Numerous leaks in the 24" pipe line were repaired. The tender of Lam Woo & Co. for the construction of a new workshop was signed and piling work was completed. Slow progress due to rain and poor foundations has been made on the rest of the work.
Work on the filters for the Fanling water supply was completed and new intake put into operation using chloride of lime treatment. Liquid chlorine dosers have now arrived from England and will be installed as soon as possible. An investi- gation was commenced into the possibility of putting Kowloon Tong service reservoir back into commission to alleviate complaints of poor pressure in area to west of Nathan Road.
