In our issue of January February 1949 we were privileged to give a full description of the contemplated Women's Hostel for the Hong Kong University to be known as Ho Tung Hall. Work on this project is now well under way embracing the scheme in its entirety as originally envisaged.
We learn from the architects that some changes have been made in the floor plans providing many additional facilities. The principal addition is in the provision, below ground floor level, of a large play porch and terrace which will be accessible from the main entrance lobby. This play porch and terrace overlooks the harbour and provides a magnificient uninterrupted view. This space has been gained at very little additional expense and the architects are happy to report that with judicious pruning of minor details it was possible, as mentioned above, to add to the facilities originally planned for without the necessity of

asking for additional funds to realise the scheme. The total cost of this project will, therefore, be well within the million dollars so generously contributed by Sir Robert Ho Tung. The approximate break-down of costs is given below and will give some indication as to how the cost has been distributed in the various works.
Construction work has been progressing favourably after overcoming initial difficulties encountered in the piling and foundation work which presented unexpected problems to be solved before actual work on the building could be started. The structural framework is now well under way and from now on rapid progress is expected.
The architects are the Metropolitan Land Co., Ltd., Architectural Office.
