The north section of the new Cen- tral Building is now fully functional and its attractive facade, towering above Pedder Street, gives a good idea of what the entire west elevation will eventually look like when the building is completed. This is ex- pected to take about eighteen months.

Exterior walls of the fourteen up- per floors (of office accommodation) have deep

concrete

separated by dark-coloured horizontal fascia faced with Italian Saivo glass mosaics in various colour combina- tions. This, besides achieving an artistic effect, also provides a per- manent finish

requiring minimum maintenance.

The three lower floors, since they contain the shops, have large panes of glass facing the street which stretch from column to column. These in the final design are strongly outlined and

emphasized with framing of black marble to the ground floor windows and black tiles to those of the floors above. This produces an effect of stability to the base of the building.

Crowds now daily throng the ground floor arcade, which leads off Pedder Street through the completed part of the building to the lift lobby at the rear entrance. This arcade is well-lit and spacious, decorated with pilasters of black, white-veined Spanish "Negro Marquina" marble which reach the
