We had the pleasure of visiting a short time ago the private residence recently completed for Mr. E. R. Childe, which is situated in the Shouson Hill district, but on the spur of the hillside overlooking Deep Water Bay.

Built to the design of Mr. W. H. Kwan, it incorporates both in design and in finish what must be considered the ideal in residential planning.

The building is of two stories with interconnecting living room and dining room on the ground floor, and two bedrooms, each with bathroom, on the upper floor. The living room which is 26'0" long and 16′0′′ wide, is beautifully proportioned with relation to the dining room, which is 14'0" X 18′0′′, set at right angles to it at a lower level.

The walls of these two rooms have a stippled texture, finished with white Snowcem. At first glance it would appear that this finish in conjunction with the huge French windows which form practically the whole of the south wall of both rooms would conduce to a glaring harshness of effect. This, however, has been entirely avoided by the large overhanging balcony which controls the light entering these two main

rooms, together with the careful planning of the colour and the positioning of the furniture, and the softening effect of the natural teak parquet flooring. The result is an interior that is bright and cheerful yet blended and subdued into a restful atmosphere.

The access road leads up to the porch and entranceway on the north side of the building, thus avoiding all inter- ference with the southern aspect. The two-car garage is placed convenient to the approach-way and serves to conceal the servants' rooms and services. There is a cloak-room and guest's lavatory off the entrance hall, while the pantry and kitchen have been cleverly placed so as to utilise the space beneath the stairway leading to the upper floor and lead directly into the servants' quarters.

Both the bedrooms are placed in the front of the building with a wide canopied balcony running the full length of the building. Many householders will appreciate the fact that there is not only large built-in cupboards and linen closets, but also a huge box-room which saves so much cluttering up of the rest of the house.
