Mr. Lim Soo Loon has been responsible for attractive and well-planned structures in Penang, He has recently designed the building of the Convent School at Pulau Tikus, Penang.

A feature of the building is the horizontal rhythm of the design. The long airy verandahs are striking and amply provide for the maximum of air and light which a school in the tropics should have. Besides roomy classrooms, it accom- modates a Library, Teachers' Room, Office, Assembly Hall with stage, Kitchen, Tiffin Hall and conveniently placed Lavatories with modern sanitation.

Most of the structure is of reinforced concrete, and the whole building presents a picture of strength combined with grace. For contrast, the porch is fluted at window level. This comes in well to balance the somewhat vertical lines of the cross and the slender modern columns decorating the porch.

The site is ideal, being adjacent to a church of somewhat Gothic design. This, together with flanking roadways called College Lane and College Avenue, adds much to the educa- tional atmosphere of the whole scheme.

The wings that strike out at right angles from the main building, conform very closely to the modern trend of educa- tional thought with regard to the planning of school buildings.

The wide verandahs which run unhampered round the top floor of the building permit of life outdoors under shelter no matter what direction the wind or sun may come from. This arrangement together with the porch, lends the building a sense of grace and hospitality befitting a dignified and imposing structure,

The first floor plan, given below, shows the position and size of the various classrooms, and the location of the library immediately over the car porch.

On the ground floor, the office is located at the entrance way in the centre of the building with four classrooms, two on either side of it. The whole of the east wing is used as a dining hall which has complete kitchen facilities, whilst in the west wing is situated the School assembly hall,

The whole structure is to be erected at a cost of about $300,000 -. Work has already commenced on the main School Buildings and is expected to be completed by the end of 1949.
