YEAR by year, the number of Singapore students seeking higher education is rapidly increasing and, for this reason, the University of Singapore is in urgent need of expansion. Plans for this have been prepared and, with an increase in student enrolment for the 1963/64 session to over 2,600, these are being implemented as quickly as funds can be obtained. Altogether, the projects envisaged will cost in the region of $21 million.
One of the most overcrowded de- partments was the Science Faculty in which the ultimate number of students to be admitted is expected to reach 1,000. Of these, 700 will probably take chemistry. This increase will call for a proportionate increase in the department's academic staff which has been expanded by four new members in 1963 and will be increas- ed by a similar number this year. A Chair in Applied Chemistry is being established and possibly a Professor-
ship in Physical and Inorganic Chemistry.
A well-known local architect, Mr. Но Kok Hoe, was commis- sioned to prepare comprehensive plans for the $M2 million new science building. Before setting to work, Mr. Ho went to Britain to study the design and layout of the chemistry buildings at Cambridge. Nottingham, Swansea and London universities. On his return, he drew
