New theatre-office building for Kwun Tong
ILVER Theatre, part of outlying
Kwun Tong's civic centre, was designed to serve an essentially working class area, growing with Hong Kong's industrial development.
The four storey building (KTIL 191) also houses a branch of the Chartered Bank and a restaurant on the ground floor and four floors of offices built along one side of the 140 ft. long theatre.
Planning was straightforward. It was conceived with the idea of having the office-unit facing the major thoroughfare, Yue Man Square, with the theatre's main entrance facing smaller Fu Yan Street.
The auditorium was placed on the inner lot of the building site and above the restaurant.

Site formation was relatively sim. ple. consisting of cutting into a slope to allow for the ground floor
restaurant.
The offices face south for better ventilation and orientation and to cut out glare from the sun.
Other salient features of the plan- ning include an impressive entrance to the bank premises at the corner of the lot, the ideal usage of the frontage of the corner lot with regard to office and theatre positions, the service entrance for the restau- rant conveniently located in a scavenging lane and the utilisation of the existing car park level for exit from the auditorium on the north.
