A problem thus arises which direction of main openings proves to be the most beneficial from the point of view of the position of the sun and also of the prevail- ing winds?

These two factors—the position of the sun and the direction of the winds-from the point of view of the most advantageous position of openings, does not quite coincide in Hongkong. Therefore one cannot categorically assert that the main openings should be placed 45° to south- west. However, the following points are to be given due consideratio.n.

North, South, North-West and South-East prove to be absolutely useless from the viewpoint of "Natural Air- Conditioning." West and East present certain benefits but these benefits are insignificant if the position of the sun is taken into consideration.

If the main openings are directed to the South- west and the auxiliary one to North-east, the house is placed ideally from the astronomical viewpoint, but, considering the prevailing winds, it will receive too little of the North-eastern "breezes” in April, May and in the autumn when it is still hot in Hongkong. During the hottest months, however, it will get the benefit of south western winds.

those of the South-West openings. This arrangement is far from ideal but the house will get plenty of North- eastern breezes in April, May, September, October and November. However in July and August there will be insufficient through draft, while in February and March the house would probably be too cool.
