RIPPER

Ateco, Oakland, Calif., USA., have announced a new radial-action Mark III series model V-HRS D8H ripper for Caterpillar D8H tractors.

Extra depth in the tool beam accom- modates inboard bearings for greater

strength and stress resistance, and a one-piece ripper support bracket spreads weight and load evenly across the entire tractor gear case.

A close-coupled radial lift design of the ripper concentrates maximum weight on the shanks for fast pene- tration and permits ripping down banks and slopes. 'Live action' shank brackets swivel 30 degrees to keep the shanks facing into the load. Heavy-duty rubber blocks absorb shock loads and extra large chromed hydraulic cylinders give quick positive action.

LOADER

Massey-Ferguson have introduced their first articulated loader, the MF 55, which is powered by a V8 diesel of 138 b.h.p.

steering, power brakes, power shift transmission and torque converter.

In the independent braking system, three separate lines are used to front and rear wheels. The air-operated hy- draulic brakes have twin reservoirs which in an emergency such as engine stall provide ample stopping power.

The V8 engine provides 138 nett flywheel horsepower at 2,250 r.p.m. Drive train, axles and wheels are all of massive proportions to lower the stresses on them and allow them to withstand heavy loading over a long life.

The makers are Massey-Ferguson (Export) Ltd., Banner Lane, Coventry. UK. Agents are Hutchison Building Ltd., Hong Kong; Borneo Motors (M) Ltd., Singapore; and Motor Service Co. Inc., Manila.

EXCAVATOR

Designed as a basic 1 cu. yd. face shovel excavator, the Smith 28 is fully convertible for duty as a drag-shovel, crawler crane, grab crane or piledriver. As a crane it can lift up to 25 tons.

Steering is by multi-tooth jaw clut- ches which, like the air brakes, are controlled by a single handlever from the driving cab. The engine, a 6LW Gardner water-cooled diesel developing 95 b.h.p. at 1,500 r.p.m., drives a 12 cu. ft./min. air compressor with water- cooled head.

All controls, including bucket door release, are air-operated and fully fail- safe. For the crane a patented lowering mechanism can be fitted to the front and rear drums to permit creeping speeds for precision lowering under full load.

HYDRAULIC CRANE

The control cab is mounted on the superstructure turntable on the new 25-ton capacity model RT62S self- propelled hydraulic crane, produced by Grove Manufacturing Co., PO Box 21, Shady Grove, Penn., USA.

The four-wheel drive, four-wheel steer machine lifts a maximum of 50,000 lb. at 12ft. radius and has a maximum hook height of 117ft. using a four-section telescoping boom that retracts to 29ft. and extends to more than 90ft.

Hydraulic double-box beam-type outriggers with vertical jacks give the RS62$ a maximum outrigger base of 16ft. 11in. The four hydraulic outrig- gers are independently controlled from the operator's cab.

Other features of the machine in- clude a full powershift transmission with four speeds forward and reverse with rear-axle disconnect, short turning radius of 22ft., maximum road speed of 28 m.p.h., twin boom-elevation cylinders, and a maximum 75-degree elevation angle.
