THE interior space of a new bowling centre now under construction in Manila will be column-free for a dis- tance of 60 metres. A combination of post-tensioning techniques and light- weight concrete has been used to pro- duce what is the longest long-span concrete structure in the Philippines.
Greenlanes bowling centre is being built as part of the public buildings and entertainment complex of the Green Hills residential area of suburban Manila. Two other long-span structures designed by the same architect are to be erected on adjacent sites a huge supermarket, called the Unimart, and a theatre to seat more than 1,000 people. The bowling centre will be connected with the rest of Green Hills by a four- lane avenue around its periphery.

Within the centre will be 34 bowl- ing alleys and players will have un- obstructed vision from one end to the other. Administrative offices and amusement rooms will be provided on a mezzanine level.
On the exterior, concrete overhangs extend for seven metres in front and five metres on three sides to provide sun shading and protection from the rain. On two sides of the centre will be covered malls and parking space for more than 2,000 cars.
Construction of the superstructure was completed in only 127 days and work is now proceeding on the interior. All drop-ceilings will be of concrete with the air-conditioning ducts passed through the long-span ribs. The con- crete surfaces will be gun-sprayed with acoustic materials.
