Both main features will show a unity of concept in that both the horizontal and vertical buildings will have a similar facade, consisting of a simple but impressive grille, inspired by a combination of tradi- tional Islamic ideas and modern design.

The design envisages the construc- tion of an 8-acre site on three levels

a great open space occupying almost half the area, which can be used for ceremonial purposes, a second level on which Members of Parliament will enter, and a third level which will provide entry for the public.

In the centre of the interior court of the main feature will be the House of Representatives 60 feet high, 120 feet long and 80 feet wide. This consists of 18 folded concrete shells which will present a similar appearance both internally and ex- ternally.

The design is very simple and modern and of great structural

Running along the centre of the ceiling, and also visible outside along the axis of the roof will be a chain of conical shells designed to give diffused light on different planes. The whole concept will be sculptural in effect, the shells also serving to assist the accoustics by breaking up sound reflections.

As one approaches the Parliament building on foot, the House of Re- presentatives will be seen rising high above the walls of the main building.

The Senate, which will be situated in the north-eastern corner of the interior court, will be similar in design, the building being 30 feet high, 90 feet long and 56 feet wide.

Full utilisation of the site allows the installation of pools and lawns, similar to "hanging gardens" on the several levels. This is in keeping with the trend to use water as a cooling medium in tropical buildings.

THE HONG KONG & FAR EAST BUILDER — VOLUME 15. NUMBER 4

In addition to the House of Representatives and the Senate, the main Parliament building will in- clude administrative offices, commit- tee rooms, a library and a restaurant.

Surrounding both the Chambers will be extensive foyers opening out on to ornamental pools where foun- tains will play continuously and cool the air.

The office tower, which will be 15 stories high, will have a completely open ground floor to allow freedom of movement for people and vehicles. It will include the members' rooms, and on the first floor there will be a special gallery from which to observe ceremonies on the open space in front. On the top of the building will be an open balcony command- ing fine views of the capital.

The Federation of Malaya has chosen a site in Victory Avenue for the construction of a National Mosque, which will cost $5 million dollars.
