NEW $20 MILLION CITY HALL BY MID - 1961

Estimated to cost about $20 million and to be completed by mid-1961, Hong Kong's City Hall has been planned in five units central block, concert hall, theatre, high block, and memorial garden.

The central block and concert hall will face on to a road parallel with, and alongside, the sea wall. This will be the main access to the City Hall and Queen's Pier via the Star Ferry Concourse.

as a covered footpath to the sea front Toad and to the eastern approach road of the Concourse area, and its roof will become a high-level walkway for occupants of the City Hall and users of the memorial garden.

The central block will house the main entrance foyer on the ground floor, ballroom on the first floor and banqueting hall at second floor level. It has been designed facing north to the sea with its north-south axis on the centre line of Queen's Pier.

The facade to the sea will be in the form of a glass screen passing through the two upper floors, so commanding an uninterrupted view of the harbour.

The west elevation of the central block overlooks the memorial garden and is composed of a granite-faced wall on which there will be a pattern of small circular bronze windows alternating with tall,

with tall, narrow ones.

The main entrance foyer will accom- modate the main booking office, the concert hall bar, and public telephone kiosks.

On the first floor of the central block will be the ballroom, with its specially sprung floor, bar, and access onto the high level walkway. At this floor level the theatre entrance will be placed.

The banqueting hall has been plan- ned to accommodate over 500 people. Access from this floor is gained to the kitchen.

The concert hall will be sited on the east-west axis of the central block and

will seat 1,540 people on a stepped floor and balcony to provide ideal viewing from all seating. The audi- torium will have splayed side walls and the ceiling will be suspended and moulded to ensure the necessary acous- tic condition.
