either automatic all-floor despatching, or with individual floor despatching, complete control of the dumbwaiter is maintained from the the mail room.

Two Automatic Signal Control Passen- ger elevators equipped with 2-car spacing have been incorporated in the new por- tion of the building. These elevators have a capacity of 3,000 lbs. and operate at the speed of 350 FPM and are equipped with automatic centre opening doors. The car designs incorporate a hanging ceiling arrangement with concealed lighting and blower. On each landing a combined hall position indicator for both elevators is incorporated depicting the position of the cars in the hoistway at all times and the direction of travel. A special feature re- lating to the entrances has been the result of the Architectural Department designing architraves or frames around the entrances which utilize only a half return of the nor- mal metal treatment. This is very satis- factory and most pleasing to the eye. It is gratifying to see the results which can be obtained on such items of equipment when, as a result of forethought, certain modifications are incorporated.

This new section houses the Legal Department and the Headquarters of the Public Works Department, but its main function is to provide the ac- commodation required by the Colonial Secretariat and, in consequence, new Council Chamber was designed and built as an annex to the main building.

The shape of the Council Chamber together with its entrance hall or ante- room, is roughly a squared off seg- ment of a circle. The members' seats are formed in two semi-circular rows around the dais, on which is the chair of the Presiding Officer. On the outer circumference of this section, follow- ing the same contours, are two press tables each seating five people. At the back, extending the full width of the Chamber, are three rows of ben- ches, the public gallery, in which ac- commodation has been provided for
