The garden pavilion
cludes three bedrooms all with large closets. two spacious bathrooms, a kitchen and servants' quarters. The service rooms are screened from the road by a concrete fence wall and louvers. The living/dining room and the bedroom facing the road have high windows for maximum privacy.
Owing to the cantilevered con- struction of the building, the upper floor is larger in area than the ground floor though almost identical in layout, the main difference being the addition of a verandah around the south and east sides of the liv ing dining room. Both living rooms have fire places fitted with electric panel fires.
Access between the two floors is by means of two external staircases. The main staircase south of the house is built of a rigid frame with cantilevered steps: this gives the impression of space and least blocks the view. The service staircase north of the house is supported on one central beam. An internal staircase is shown on the plan, but since the two floors are independent this has been shut off.
Construction consists of a rein- forced concrete frame supported on Franki piling because the site con- sists of filled eround. Floors and roof are also of reinforced concrete. panel and partition wals are of brick; steel windows have been used throughout.. Some of the external walls are plastered and extensive use has been made of ovcrburnt bricks which, because of their irregular size and colour. give an interesting tex- ture and finish. The fence wall and the concrete louvers to the servants' quarters were precast using very rough wood forms to give a wood- erained finish to the concrete. In- ternal walls and celings are plaster- ed and most doors are flush type: floors to main rooms are teak par- quet, with mosaic floors and glazed tile dadoes to kitchens and bath-
