BLOK

B

The flats are generally similar in all respects, each consisting of a liv- ing room, two bedrooms, a kitchen and a bathroom, covering a total area of over 500 square feet. Entrance is direct from the corridor into the living room through double French windows, there being glass louvers in the corridor wall to provide permanent ventilation. The living room is about 140 square feet in area and from it open all of the other rooms. The bedrooms are long in plan to provide ample wall space. and are separated from the living room and from each other by parti- tions; one is 150 square feet in area, the other 127 square feet. Some of the flats have a balcony which opens off the two bedrooms at the front of the building. The lavatory has a removable duck-board, a shower, and a shelf for a wash-basin. Laundry drying racks are provided off the corridor opposite the flats.

The total cost of Block C, as the new building is known, was approxi- mately six lakhs. The cube rate works out at about $1.20 per cubic foot, a remarkably low figure when the cost of all piling has been includ- ed. In actual fact, this second block was 14% cheaper per flat to build than the pilot scheme.
