Summary of Progress July to December 1951

MONG the projects completed during this period were the offices and quarters for the Revenue department, the Royal Hong Kong Defence Force Headquarters, new ward for the Kowloon Hospital, re- creation centre for police quarters on Holly-wood Road, public latrines at Cheung Sha Wan, and extension to the registration office, North Point.

Projects on which work has started and progressing satisfactorily include the demolition of the Royal Hong Kong Defence Force Headquarters piling work for new Asiatic Police on Canton Road, the Albany Road flats, Hunghom market, Albany Road flats, Hunghom market, Grantham Training College, the new Blockhouse at Kam Tin, and the Severn Road houses. Of these the new Secretariat have progressed to the point where separate contract has been left for site formation and excavation for basement. Tenders for air-conditioning were also re- ceived, but working drawings cannot be finalised until the air-conditioning contract has been awarded.

Working drawings and details have been completed for the Shumshuipo Post Office, Police Headquarters Arsenal Yard, the radio and weather station at Waglan, radio and weather station at Cheung- chau, garages and workshops for P.W.D. at Caroline Hill, the Aber deen Primary School, and Chambers for the fourth Judge at Supreme Court. Tenders were called for the Marine Licencing Station at Tai O, and the extension to casualty block at Kowloon Hospital The site for the new T. B. Clinic in Hong Kong

BUILDINGS ORDINANCE

OFFICE

1507 plans covering 2967 buildings were received.

2001 plans covering 3541 buildings were approved.

for 100 European type houses, 73 Chinese type houses, 10 staff quar- ters, 2 hostels, 1 Seamen's Mission ters, 2 hostels, 1 Seamen's Mission Building, 3 dormitories, 1 War Memorial Centre, 1 Wing of hospital building, and 1 block of 12 European flats.

170 Domestic Permits were issued

91 Non-domestic Permits were issued for 10 godowns, 7 factories, 6 schools, 24 shops and offices, 3 gar- ages, 3 sub-stations, 4 workshops, 1 bottling plant and office, 2 club buildings, 1 entertainment hall, 12

stores.

225 dangerous buildings notices were served affecting 261 houses, 83 notices affecting 110 houses were served under Sections 104 and 126 of the Buildings Ordinance 1935; 45+ inspections and reports were 444 notices affecting illegal structures, made by this Office in regard to structural stability of premises to be licensed by other Departments; and 250 tests and inspections of drainage system to various districts were carried out.

CROWN LANDS & SURVEY OFFICE

purchase of Crown Land, including extensions to existing lots, ex- changes, grants, etc. Six lots were sold by Public Auction realising were sold by Private Treaty to the total of $829,700.00, and two lots

amount of $24,932.00. 17 lots were granted in exchange and 5 free grants made. Extension of time for completion of Building Covenants was granted on 17 lots, fines being imposed in each case. 244 permits were issued for temporary leasing of Crown Land, total annual fee

amounting to $136,278.00.

During the last quarter of the year 48 applications for the purchase of Crown Land were made; 4 lots were sold by Public Auction realising a sum of $1,600,000, and 328 permits were issued for temporary leasing of Crown Land, the total annual fees for which amounted to $100,394. DRAINAGE OFFICE

General maintenance work pro- ceeded satisfactorily: 820 chokes were cleared from sewers on the Island and 1049 on the Mainland. Repair works to nullahs, sewers, culverts and anti-malarial works totalled 234.

Works executed on Private

Account included 296 foul and stormwater sewer connections, and

during extensions totalling 2485 were laid during the quarter. Foul and stormwater sewers contingent on Land sales were extended to a total of 6241 feet to serve land now being developed.

A contract for improvement works to the Shing Mun River near Tai Wai was commenced on 7th August, 1951 and satisfactory progress has been made.
