ASIA'S BIGGEST AUDITORIUM

DERCHED on top of the flattened

crest of a hill overlooking the spacious campus of Singapore's Nanyang University is the institu- tion $ new auditorium and senate building.

The building. now in its midway stage of construction. will, when finished in March next year, furnish a striking contrast with the other buildings in the university.

Unlike many of the other build- ings which reflect all the grandeur of ancient China, the auditorium and senate building is built in line with the most modern concepts of architecture and building technique.

When completed. it will un- doubtedly be one of the most out- standing and imposing buildings in the campus.

With the addition of this edifice and the recently completed ultra- modern three storey students' union house, this

this fast-growing Chinese university now has an atmosphere of old and new, oriental and oc- cidental.

Designed by Ng Keng Siang, this new building, costing M$1.5 million, is a rectangular-shaped structure measuring 230 feet by 200 feet. The front portion comprises 4 storeys while the side has three storeys.

The front porch has a distinctive feature of three semi-circular arches supporting the concrete slab in this part of the building. There are also ornamental pre-cast grills and a curtain wall over the front which acts as sunbreakers.

The balcony measures 130 feet at its narrowest point and 180 feet at its widest end.

The auditorium is on the ground floor and upper gallery. It has a seating capacity of 5,000 which makes it one of the biggest and modern university auditoriums in Asia.

The stage is 70 feet wide and 40 feet deep.
