NIQUE in this South Malayan town of Johore Bahru, the Hock Yee Hin building, now going up between Jalan Ah Fook and Jalan Trus, in the centre of this capital of Johore state, is a com- bination of shopping centre and office quarters.

Estimated to cost on completion over M$1.000.000. the six-storeyed building is in the heart of this grow- ing town between two streets that are on different levels. so that en trance to the shopping arcade from Jalan Ah Fook is at ground level. while entrance to the motor-car showroom on the first floor will be from Jalan Trus only.

A feature of this first floor show- room is a cantilever of 12-foot span jutting out over Jalan Trus capable of taking loads up to 200 pounds per square foot. It is proposed to put motor cars on this cantilever for display purposes.

The shopping arcade will have a 40-foot wide pedestrian way down. the centre shops on both sides. From the right hand side of the Jalan Ah Fook entrance a lift will give ac- cess to the offices on the second, third, fourth and fifth floors and to the restaurant on the sixth floor. The staircase also serving this floors ises from left hand side of the main entrance.

The entire building is 86 feet high. Its length is 150 feet - the distance between Jalan Ah Fook and Jalan Trus and its width is 60 feet.

All floors will be finished in mosaic tiling and have been built to

take a stress of 200 pounds per square foot. Adequate ventilation is provided by air wells serving all floors and taking up 10 per cent of the built-in area. Steel framed windows will be installed throughout.

Externally the building will have concrete fins with a glazed tile finish.

Construction generally is in rein- forced concrete and the building stands on 190 pressure driven piles. The piling has been design- ed and carried out to allow for a further three floors to be put on the building at a later stage if the own- er. Mr. Tay Hua Chuan, a leading Johore businessman so decides on seeing the reception given to his novel undertaking in a town which has never before had a commercial building of this size or complexity.

Architect of the Hock Yee Hin building is Mr. K. N. Damu, an en- gineer who formerly worked with a private firm and later with the Pub- lic Works Department in Johore. Since retiring from public service Mr. Damu has designed several other buildings in Johore Bahru in- cludind the Wong Shee Fun build- ing and the Light Church as well as flats and houses.
