CUTTING COSTS IN BUILDING

C OST-CUTTING by saving in

manpower is the aim of every- body in the building industry where competition, even with building and and foreshadowed building in Hong Kong has reached a peak never known before.

Mechanisation is the answer to the problem of cost-cutting but there are many branches in building where the suitable machine is not easy to find. Transport with its loading and off loading, sometimes to be frequently repeated. has always been stubborn in its resistance to cost cutting.

But mechanisation is coming. Lam Woo

and Co. are experimenting with a new type of hydraulic lorry which promises to reduce costs considerably from several points of view.

This Hiab lorry crane, three different models now in Hong Kong cuts costs in three ways: its fingertip dual control allows the

crane to be operated by the lorry driver who can keep his moving. load in sight throughout the loading and unloading process; it fits into a small space of between 10 and 14 inches behind the cab, leaving the floor of the load space free; and its mobility does away with the need for cranes at both store and work sites.

This particular crane can lift to a height of 18 feet, can, by using snaps, be used for winching on the level or from below ground level, can swing 360 degrees, and can lift. one ton at standard settings. By changing the valve this weight can be safely trebled.

For lifting these heavier weights and for working on awkward sites with uneven levels hydraulic outrig- gers can be supplied for fitting un- derneath the operating lorry. A power take off unit can also be supplied if the type and make of unit are made known.

But the great advantage of these cranes is that the hydraulic power. the elasticity of the folding and extending arm of the jib, and its accurate positioning make it possible for one man to do a job which previously demanded the services of several men and the one man is always with the job. no matter where it is.
