NEW RESIDENCE ON SHOUSON HILL

SHOUSON

A view of the house from the car court

The resident of Mr. Chas. T. Carroll, Managing Director of the Hong Kong Bottlers Fed. Inc., authorized bottlers of Coca- Cola, recently completed in the Shouson Hill area, adds another attractive home to the fast growing list of outstanding residences from the drawing board of Mr. Kenneth Smith- Mitchell of The Metropolitan Lands, Architectural Department. The attractiveness of the exterior of the building has been enhanced by the clever combining of natural stone walls with the more conventional plastered surfaces. The architect has used this device in a number of buildings previously designed by him, but the originality he displays in varying the combinations of the two mediums results in a different effect each time. The use of this device in Hong Kong usually stamps the building as the work of this architect yet with such ingenuity is it employed that no trace of monotony is felt in its repetition.

The reason for the plan as developed will be found in the particular features of the site itself. A very high hill to the south-east of the property, on which an anti-aircraft emplacement was located during the last war, restricted the view somewhat towards the south. The only other attractive view was toward Aberdeen and for that reason it was decided to shoot at that view through the windows in the living room. Also, because of an existing approach road which entered into the main platform of the site at the south-west corner, it was decided to place the car court and the entrance on the south
