finished in an off-white plastic emulsion paint while the columns and other vertical features are dark grey. Rec- tangular sun-breakers at first floor level match the width and projection of the roof overhangs.

Roofs are waterproofed by a layer of asphalt on cement rendering. An- other layer of broken bricks and de- composed granite is sandwiched be- tween the asphalt and the final finish of Canton tiles. This roofing method is widely used on new buildings in Macau.

Main access to the church at first floor is by a 15ft. wide staircase which rises up from an open courtyard in front of the building.

The dark grey and white colours of the exterior are repeated inside the church, except for an expanse of un- treated red-brick wall at the back of

the altar on which the crucifix is mounted. The church floor is of light grey terrazzo, and the altar, the seat for celebrants and the tabernacle are in light cream travertino marble. Shafts of yellow, blue and green light from the stained glass windows are high- lights in the austere interior.

Working within a total budget of under HK$850,000, the architect has endowed the church with a simple dignity commensurate with the un- pretentiousness of the devout.
