THE architects for a new private house at 114 Windsor Park Road, Singapore, were unhampered by the oft-quoted prevarication and mind-changing of the client.
Mr. Chee Cheng Fook, the owner and a successful building contractor in the republic, made his requirements quite clear. His house, he said, should be contemporary while avoiding a box- like effect and should provide for the space and comfort needs of himself, his wife and his three grown-up daughters.
More particularly Mr. Chee specified that on the ground floor the living area should have a sense of spacious- ness, but not be too large. There should be a generous front terrace as an ex- tension to the living space and con- veniently accessible to visitors. The dining room should be spatially separat- ed from the living room and the kitchen should be sufficiently spacious to allow for a breakfast corner.
Also required were a laundry area adjacent to the kitchen with separate sink; built-in cupboards and working counters for food mixers, cake making and washing machine etc.; a covered drying area adjacent to the laundry room; a servant's room with separate w.c.; a large storeroom; garage for two cars; and storage space for gardening equipment.
Bedroom balconies
On the first floor the owner called for a large master bedroom with attach- ed bathroom and an unobstructed view, three separate smaller bedrooms, one other bathroom and a small family area. Each bedroom was to have a separate balcony.
The site on which the architects were to translate these instructions is situated about six miles from the city at the fringe of a nature reserve. It is
