basement car park will occupy the whole area of the site and will provide covered parking for 373
cars.
For the Portuguese Republic the contractors will build a dramatic pavilion presenting a sunburst of copper roofs on white walls. Interior exhibits Eric Taylor Associates, Kuala Lumpur, are the will highlight the history and contemporary life of
architects.
Contracts for more Expo pavilions
Takenaka Komuten Co. Ltd., which is already building 12 pavilions at Osaka for Expo '70, has been awarded contracts for a further six. These in- clude the subterranean West German pavilion des- cribed in the January Far East Builder.
The other five will be for the Matsushita Group, the Japanese Automobile Manufacturers' Associa- tion, the Christian Church, Portugal and the State of Ontario.
Matsushita will have a peaceful temple featuring traditional Japanese architecture of the 8th century. The structure will sit on pilotis on a 6,000 sq. metre pond and will be surrounded by a large bamboo
grove.
The automobile manufacturers are using a site of 9,600 sq. metres to exhibit 'Rhythms of Change', 'Rhythms of the World' and 'Rhythms of Traffic'. Exhibits will be housed in two transparent towers rising from circular plazas. A third plaza will serve to demonstrate computer-control of traffic on a radial pattern.
Parabolic lines of steel beams on the Christian pavilion will symbolise 'hands of prayer', 'hands of service' and 'hands of compassion'. The building will have 676.5 sq. metres of floor space on a 1,034 sq. metre site.
Portugal.
By contrast the pavilion of the State of Ontario will be a simple structure of blue plain walls sup- ported by massive white concrete pillars and beams and braces. The main wing will house a theatre to admit 2,000 persons an hour.
Low cost housing for 26,000
The Hong Kong Government's low cost housing estate at Ho Man Tin, Kowloon, which will even- tually accommodate more than 26,000 people, will soon be under construction. Piling for the 15-storey blocks is expected to start next month.
The estate will comprise eight blocks with 4,000 flats and two schools, three market buildings, three kindergartens, a post office, shops, communal ame- nities and administration offices. Its total cost is estimated at HK$24 million.
Pavilions for Second Asian Fair
British engineers have completed the design of their country's pavilion for the Second Asian Inter- national Trade Fair which will held in Tehran next October.
The roof of the structure, which covers an area of 3,250 sq. metres uninterrupted by supporting columns, is a system of hyperbolic paraboloids con- structed from a network of aluminium tube. The tube lengths - all of which are different – have been
