There are actually three separate units in the project — the school at the east end. the Settlement at the west end and the church in between. The fact that the school alone will occupy more than half the total site called for careful planning to pro- vide all the other accommodation wanted within the available space.

The area

of the whole site is about 37.000 square feet, of which the school will occupy about 20,000 sq.ft.. and the Settlement building about 11.500 sq.ft. The remainder of the area will be for the church.

Work has already begun on the school, and a workshop building

over the nullah.

Once the workshop is finished, the activities centralised in the overtax- ed Nissen will be transferred. The hut will be demolished and work will then begin on a new main building for the Settlement.

It is hoped to complete the foundations for the main building during the dry season so that con- struction work can be well under way in the New Year.

The school will have 24 class. rooms, and will accommodate 1080 pupils. Since it will be conducted in morning and afternoon sessions. 2160 children will attend daily.

The design provides for a semi- basement at road level. to house a covered playground and changing

rooms.

The ground floor, which is at the main playground level, contains headmasters' offices, caretaker's quarters and covered playgrounds.

The classrooms and teachers' com- mon rooms will be on the first to fourth floors, and the main part of the roof will form an additional playground. There will be two small flats for teachers at roof level.

EXRTING PATH

From the planning viewpoint, the site is of interest. At the rear, it is bounded by a steep slope and a retaining wall. and this part of the site slopes too steeply to be of use as a playground. To meet this situa- tion the building was placed right against the toe of the slope, and the back wall of the ground floor covered playground thus serves as a retaining wall.
