ST. JAMES' SETTLEMENT EXPANSION PLAN

T

Design Engineer: J.C. Faber, B. A. (Cantab.) A.M.I. C. E.

HE modern group of buildings

into which St. James' Settlement, in Kennedy Road, Hong Kong, is presently being expanded, represents a splendid advance on the very mod- est beginnings of a decade when the Settlement began its wel. fare work among the underprivileg- ed of populous Wanchai, from at Nissen hut.

ago,

The Nissen hut is still very much in existence in fact bursting at the seams with the multitude of activities it houses but it days are numbered.

The new Settlement and school buildings, which represent a large and somewhat complicated develop- ment, are to be erected in several stages on the site formerly occupied by the Government laundries. The site is bounded on the north by Kennedy Road, on the east by a stepped path, on the south by the foot of a massive retaining wall, and on the west by a pedestrian way. Across the pedestrian way additional space has been made available by culverting the nullah.
