This will be the first Resettlement Estate to be composed entirely of single blocks instead of the 'H' shaped blocks which have hitherto formed the basic design.

The reason for this change was

Except as stated above, the design and construction of the buildings will follow that of all multi-storey resettlement structures with one not- able exception. Seven of the build- ings, comprising 1,340 rooms will be constructed in reinforced concrete. with reinforced concrete bearing walls at 10 ft. centres and the eighth building, comprising 156 rooms will have similar walls at 12 ft. centres. This is being done as an experiment in order to ascertain whether the wider spacing of the main walls affords better dimensions for parti- tioning by settlers in individual rooms, and also for future conversion Into self-contained flats should the opportunity arise.

Conversion of the top floor of this buildng into seven self-contained flats forms part of the contract, and the flats will be used as quarters for staff of the Resettlement Department.

Offices for administrative purposes and for the collection of rent, to- gether with staff toilets, are being provided on the ground floor of the first block to be completed. A large proportion of ground floor rooms in all blocks will be available for shops and workshops.

An open space of approximately 29,000 sq.ft. will be provided in the north-east corner of the estate to be used as a recreational area.
