THE HONG KONG AND FAR EAST BUILDER

To assist shipping over the bar facing the Menam River the firm was awarded the contracts for constructing a floating pilot station and a lighthouse. The pilot station was constructed as a reinforced concrete ship with a length of fortysix metres and a displacement of about six hundred tons.

The lighthouse was built as a R.C. caisson resting on eighteen metre long, hollow R.C. piles driven inside the caisson after the latter had been sunk to its final position. The depth of water at the lighthouse is between four and five metres and the thickness of the soft mud layers is twelve metres,

By far the larger part of the construction works re- viewed above were carried out before the war.

The post- war political instability has discouraged private investment and the economic difficulties facing the Siamese Govern- ment as a result of the war have interrupted the pre-war programme of development and have delayed even urgent reconstruction work. The revival of the development plans will probably require foreign capital and depends therefore on the international situation in general.

(The Company referred to in the above review is Christiani and Nielsen (Thai) Ltd., which was established in 1930 by Danish engineers as a Siamese Company with Siamese and Danish capital. The Company is affiliated to the Christiani and Nielsen Company which was founded in Copenhagen in 1904 by Dr. Rud. Christiani and Capt. Aage Nielsen. The main object of the two founders was to de- velop the use of reinforced concrete, at that time a method of construction of little known properties and with un- known possibilities. The development from the small and insignificant firm started in 1904 to the present worldwide organization of branches and affiliated companies is closely related to the adaptation of reinforced concrete as a struc- tural medium with an ever increasing range of applications. The firm, which is still directed from the Head Office in Copenhagen, has carried out R.C. construction of all types and sizes under many different conditions and in many latitudes and is still devoted to extending the scope of rein- forced concrete as a building material.)
