THE HONG KONG AND FAR EAST BUILDER

TWO APARTMENTS ON COOMBE ROAD

To the architect each building that he is asked to design presents itself as a series of problems, the solution to which ultimately becomes a monument to his ingenuity. This is true of every building, but normally a small house has few problems and presents few difficulties to the ex- perienced architect.

In this site on R.B.L. 140, Coombe Road, the principal problem was to provide a building containing two fair-sized apartments on a restricted area limited on the one side by a deep cutting, on the other by a steep bank, with the access provided on a sharp incline that dictated very care- ful consideration of the shape and position of the building.

The success with which the architect, Mr. P. L. L. Biau, tackled this problem is illustrated in the very attrac- tive building which has recently been completed, in which the entrance hall giving access to the two flats was ingeni- ously arranged as the pivotal point of the design and the main rooms placed so as to obtain full benefit of view and breeze. The rooms are of modest size, but the arrangement of bathrooms and built-in cupboards supplement the area and allow for the maximum convenience of the arrangement.

The General Contractors for the building were Messrs. Mei Hon Co., the electrical work and hot water system was installed by Messrs. U. Spalinger & Co., Ltd., whilst the steel windows were local made supplied by the Hong Kong Metal Window Mfg. Co.
