Singapore Improvement Trust Development

The work of the Singapore Im- provement Trust in the development of new housing projects for artisans and other low income groups is one of considerable importance in the de- velopment of that Colony. The Trust has now been in existence for 24 years, and the full impact of the work accomplished by its three main departments, the architectural sec- tion, the lands and planning sections, and the survey section, can only be appreciated by reference to the an- nual reports which they issue.

We are unfortunately not in pos- session of the latest information covering the activities of the Trust, but from all reports their accomplish. ments in the acquisition and clear- ance of slum properties, the acquisi- tion and development of new lands,

and the opening up of roads required for the extensive housing schemes to relieve overcrowding and facilitate the housing of slum dwelle.s, is little short of amazing.

They maintain close liaison with the Municipal Departments and with Government Departments and enjoy the fullest cooperation and obtain the utmost financial assistance pos- sible, as a result of this relationship.

The organisation of an estate sec- tion in 1948 was necessary as it had been recognised for some time that the care and management of the Trust properties, and the control of lettings was a specialised job. This

section is being kept very busy cop- ing with the volume of work result- ing from the Trust's Housing Pro- gramme and will continue to expand in view of the tremendous develop- ments during the post war years for which the Trust has been respon- sible.

Through the courtesy of the Senior Architect and Planner of the Singa- pore Improvement Trust, Mr. Lincoln Page, A.R.I.B.A., A.M.T.P.I.. we are able to publish details of one of their recently completed projects at Tiong Bahru, consisting of two blocks com- prising 39 two-roomed flats and 39 three-roomed flats. Twenty six shops. occupy the entire ground floor, while the roof has been utilised as a pavi- lion for children and for the purpose of drying clothes.
