Singapore Housing Scheme

A new Singapore housing estate, the biggest ever visualised in the Colony and capable of accom- modating 10,000 middle-class wage-earners-almost a compact small town—is to be built in the Upper Serangoon area. The scheme provides for 250 shops, 600 terrace houses,400 detached bungalows and 150 bungalows.

The character and extent of the scheme was the subject of an editorial in the "'Straits Times" of 30th September, 1950, from which we quote the following, "It is not usual in these columns to give publicity to a private enterprise run for profit. The proper place for that is the prospec- tus. But the plan for a huge hous- ing estate to be built by the Sennett Realty Company at Serangoon is an exception. In the first place, this enterprise will derive no benefit from the publicity which we are now giving it, since applications have already been received for all the houses which it intends to build, and the layout has already been approved in principle by the Improvement Trust.
