Lady Grantham was met on her arrival in the compound by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. A. C. Maxwell, while Mrs. Maxwell was also in attendance.
Among the many guests who were invited to witness the ceremony were the Secretary for Chinese Affairs, Mr. R. R. Todd, Mrs. Todd, and members of the Executive, Legislative and Urban Councils and their wives. The Police Force was well represented.
Mr. Maxwell introduced Lady Grantham to the gathering in a short. speech, in which he underlined the importance of the event.
Lady Grantham in the introduction to her speech said: "I am very glad to be here on this important occasion and to have the honour of opening this building. It is important because it means homes and family life for you who are so fortunate as to have been given quarters here. A united family makes for strength and happiness. Your sons being with you and seeing your devotion to duty, will no doubt, in many cases, wish to follow in their fathers' footsteps and carry on the family tradition of service in the Hongkong Police Force of which we are all so proud. Although these premises will give homes to 168 families, this is only a small number of those who are in need of accom- modation, and this is to be regretted. However, a start has been made, and I am glad to say that plans are in hand for 400 more families to be similarly housed.”
